Born and raised in the East Village, Lulu Yao Gioiello is a Taiwanese and Italian-American creative director for agencies, brands, publications and institutions operating within fashion, art and culture.¹

She has directed campaigns for Prada, Apple, Marriott’s Luxury Hotels and Johnnie Walker, working across visual direction, film direction, strategy, copywriting and design.

She is the founding editor and artistic director of FAR–NEAR, a cross-cultural book series and platform aimed at broadening perspectives of Asia through image, idea, person and history to unlearn the inherent dominative mode.²

Lulu’s publications have been collected by the Metropolitan Museum of Art, MoMA Artists’ Books Collection, the SVA Library, Asia Art Archive, the International Center of Photography, the Walker Art Center, and are sold in various art bookstores, institutions and galleries across Asia, the Americas, Europe and the UAE.

¹ the real thing, not the buzzword

² The Asian continent and its people have often been seen through a foreign eye – painted as “the other” to a Western audience. Extending beyond the Far East, FAR–NEAR features voices from Japan to Iran and everywhere in between.
Collaboraters of the book series include Tuan Andrew Nguyen, Takashi Homma, Trinh T. Minh-Ha, Slavs and Tatars, Rirkrit Tiravanija, Taysir Batniji, Nick Sethi, Fatima Al Qadiri, among many more.
In addition to the physical and online publication, FAR-NEAR also hosts talks, exhibitions, film screenings, workshops, roundtables, small gatherings and an archive of Asian artist books at FAR-NEAR Studio Hours in Chinatown, Manhattan.
